[Nightlife: Neon Masquerade] "Night of the Living Dead" (Episode Six)

  1. Just to correct one place where you misspoke. You meant to say "..,talk about what's *right* about how pretentious [Vampire] is." So very right. :)

Really enjoyed this episode, as always. I sometimes felt that the accent on the fake Dracula was a bit more Ricardo Montalban than Bela Lugosi, but that just made it funnier.

If this were an orthodox Camarilla game, it would be completely obvious how obsessed vampires would be with Twitter. One of the things that they did very well with the setting was portray a society that runs entirely on vicious gossip.

  2. Des, you say that you feel that playing these sessions so far apart is wrecking your mojo because you can't seem to keep to a single objective, but I think it adds a certain realism to your portrayal of a young man suffering from schizophrenia.

Honestly, I feel bad for Aaron, wondering around town looking for a woman who doesn't exist, talking to coyotes. It's sad.

But anyways, Aaron, don't let your longterm plans take too long - I have it on good authority that the Slayer's going to be in the area in ten years or so.

    1. It'd be an interesting exercise to imagine what Vampire: the Masquerade would have looked like (as a setting) if it had not been created until after Buffy the Vampire Slayer arrived on TV screens. It's hard to envisage a post-BTVS V:tM taking itself so terribly *seriously*.

    2. It's just as interesting to imagine what a WoD-ified Buffy would look like. Hmmm... ::glances over at copy of Hunter's Hunted on the shelf::

    3. Lilith Saintcrow (a WoD name if ever I heard one) has a series of books on a character called Jill Kismet. Not too close to Buffy or WoD, but they've got the super-powered, monster-hunting heroine who depends on her friends, and they've got the sort of gritty... well, darkness that I associate with WoD.

    4. I think you would Buffify the WoD simply by playing a hunters campaign ironically and knowingly: sending up the tropes at the same time as celebrating them. Your Vampire game is in that territory some of the time, in fact: Aaron is an easy character to imagine being on Angel.

When I say WoD here I really mean the original Vampire and Wraith - the original Werewolf and Mage were different, to the extent that tonally, they weren't really in the same WoD as Vampire at all. (I never more than leafed through Changeling or the new WoD stuff, so I don't know about those.)

Werewolf is actually pretty close to Buffy in some ways, now that I think about it. Which I suppose isn't surprising, since they're both basically superhero stories.

Werewolf in high school. That would work. Obvious Buffyesque metaphors about "going through all these changes" abound. I've never seen an episode of the tv show Teen Wolf, but I bet there are BTVS influences all over the place.
